Eli Lily manufactures brand name Prozac. There are generic Prozac (fluoxetine) manufacturers.
Prozac is FDA approved for the treatment of depression but may be used for other problems as well.
Prozac is an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) medication.
It may take a number of weeks for Prozac to reach full therapeutic benefits.
Prozac is typically not considered an addiction producing drug but dependency can occur with this medication. Therefore, abrupt discontinuation can cause withdrawal symptoms. Gradual discontinuation is recommended.

It totally killed my sex life. and it's tru it takes a few weeks for it to kick in but the side effects suck. i didn't feel like normal. and I had bad reaction to it. with my circulation. I lost all of my sex drive. and it took about 2-3 mos for it to wear off. it worked. but i never felt addicted to it. i say if you use it.. do a trial. if not then try something else.

I have been taking fluoxitine for 3 months now and when I drink i have extremly violent and suacidal reactions. I am not on this drug because i am suicidal, why is it making me do strange things when i consume alcohol?

howdy. i am a schitzofrenic depresive. im also on prozac. my antipsychotic is clozapine. my question is, what is known about the interaction between these? i ask this cause im not sure about it. can it cause extreem dizzines whilst training(fanaticly) also i find myself posing the question : what happens to the serotonin that is inhibited. does it acumulate? thanks, yours friendly, Alex

This story is very short. The time frame was all in 3 years. I was depressed and given prozac. I had negative psychological reactions to the prozac. I had the classic symptoms of bipolar disorder (now that I re-examined the past with clear sight). The MD I was seeing was not a psychiatrist. He added a mood stabilizer and the list continues of trying medications and doses. I eventually took most of the medications on this site due to the bad reaction from prozac. I gained 70 lbs and could not drop weight no matter how much I walked and little or much I ate. During this three year period I stopped seeing the MD for psychiatric medications and started to see a Psychiatrist. Since my MD referred my I took his mis-label with me and still continued to take medications that were not meant for my condition. After taking the same medication with no does changes for a year I found another Psychiatrist and explained my situation. (My psychiatrist stated that he would reduce my medications if I was stable for a year and determine if I needed them) I requested that he make his own assessment of me and if I was bipolar it did not matter since I have lived with the medication and diagnosis for almost three years anyway. I further explained that the medications were not really making me feel better and I was more bitter, upset, and depressed about the weight gain from medication that was not even working. He monitored me reduced my medications to on antidepressant and it was not prozac. He told me that I did not have bipolar disorder but major depression. There were many lessons here: 1 If a medication makes you do things you would not normally do, then take the initiative to tell the doctor that it is not working and explain. Request to try a different antidepression. The possibility for things to spiral is great if the medication is not a good mixture for you. If you don't remember things, then have someone you trust talk to or write the doctor about your behavior. Or keep a log of how you feel and leave the odd behaviors to someone close to you to keep track of. 2 Leave it to the experts. Let someone who is trained in administering psychiatric medications prescribe and monitor them. I could have avoided this ordeal if a psychiatrist were around to recognize that the prozac just was not a good medication for me. 3 Don't wait until you are not clear in thought to seek professional help. Don't be afraid to ask for help before things get bad. Tiki

I used to be on fluoxetine a few years ago for depression and bullimia, it really helped but recently I was perscribed it again and I had a very bad reaction. About a week after taking it daily I could nt sleep was extreamly anxious to the point of getting agraphobic, my hands shaking violently and my eyes bulging and my heart racing. I went straight back to the doctor who said keep taking it as it will get worse before it gets better. I suggested was it a reaction to me taking Ginseng regularly and she didnt know. However, against her advice I stopped fluoxetine and now and the symptoms soon went. If any one else has had a similar reaction it would be interesting to hear.
